LEEDS: Pakistan endured a forgettable outing at Headingley as they suffered a 103-run defeat to England in the first Test of the three-match series on Friday, with their batting collapse producing several unwanted records.
The defeat came after Pakistan had drawn their previous two-Test series against the West Indies 1-1, but they struggled to cope with England’s pace attack throughout the Test.
Pakistan were first dismissed for just 171 in their opening innings, with Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue claiming five wickets apiece.
England responded with 409, securing a commanding 238-run first-innings lead. Jordan Cox, Joe Root, Harry Brook and Dan Lawrence all made valuable half-centuries, while Ali Usman became the standout performer for Pakistan with a maiden five-wicket haul.

Facing a huge deficit, Pakistan needed a vastly improved batting display to avoid an innings defeat. Instead, they were bowled out for 135 in just 37.3 overs.
The total became Pakistan’s sixth-lowest score in England since 2000, with their 72 all out against England at Edgbaston in 2010 remaining their lowest total during the period.

The collapse also resulted in Pakistan suffering their sixth-biggest innings defeat against England in Test cricket. It was their heaviest innings defeat since 2010, when they were beaten by an innings and 225 runs at Lord’s.
England’s 103-run victory at Headingley therefore moved them into sixth place on their list of biggest innings victories over Pakistan.
