LEEDS: Jofra Archer struck twice with the new ball to leave Pakistan in trouble at lunch on the third day of the opening Test at Headingley on Friday.

The visitors were 59-3 in 13.4 overs, with Shan Masood remaining not out on 28 from 53, whereas Saud Shakeel scored five from 13 balls.

Pakistan bowled England out for 409, conceding a substantial 238-run first-innings lead.

England resumed the day on 366-8 and added 43 runs before being dismissed in 89.5 overs, strengthening their grip on the Test after bowling Pakistan out for 171 in the first innings.

Jamie Smith and Jofra Archer initially extended England’s advantage with a 28-run ninth-wicket partnership, taking the hosts past the 400-run mark.

Khurram Shahzad eventually ended the stand by removing Smith for 25 off 52 deliveries. The wicketkeeper-batter struck two boundaries during his stay at the crease.

Archer remained unbeaten on 23 off 25 balls, while Josh Tongue contributed eight before Shahzad dismissed him to complete his third wicket of the innings and bring England’s innings to an end.

Ali Usman was the pick of Pakistan’s bowlers, finishing with 5-95 from 24 overs to register his maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket. Shahzad claimed 3-133, while Mohammad Abbas and Mohammad Ali took one wicket apiece.

England had dominated the second day after dismissing Pakistan for 171 on the opening day, with Joe Root, Dan Lawrence and Harry Brook all scoring half-centuries to put the hosts firmly in control.
