Verstappen upsets Leclerc, edges Hamilton to win Hungarian Grand Prix

BUDAPEST: Max Verstappen clinched a thrilling win at the Hungarian Grand Prix as he stormed through the field from tenth on the grid, here on Sunday.

With the remarkable victory, the Red Bull world champion recorded his eighth win of the season and 28th overall as he crossed the line 7.8 seconds clear of Lewis Hamilton with George Russell finishing third.

The victory put Verstappen 80 points ahead of title rival Charles Leclerc, who finished sixth raising objections over Ferrari’s race strategy.

Leclerc seemed to be on the course for victory before Ferrari switched him to the hard compound tyre at his second pit stop.

Despite a spin on lap 41 and briefly losing the lead to Leclerc, Verstappen overtook the Ferrari on lap 45 to retake the lead and win the race.

While Russell has been disheartened for not finishing at top of the pole, it was still a satisfying result for Mercedes who had their second consecutive double podium finish after their early-season struggles.
