WAVRE: Spain moved closer to a place in the semi-finals of the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 after defeating Germany in the 28th match at the Belfius Hockey Arena on Friday.
The Red Sticks defeated the defending champions 2-1, securing three crucial points. Jose Basterra starred with two goals, while Justus Weigand scored one for Germany.
Both teams were unable to open the scoring in the first quarter.
However, the second quarter saw the end of the deadlock as Justus sent one through the nets in the 25th minute of the game. After four minutes, Jose scored an equalizer, courtesy of a penalty stroke to level the score.
The scoreline remained 1-1 at the end of the third quarter before Jose struck his second goal in the 49th minute to put his side in a commanding position.

As a result, Spain secured a 2-1 victory and earned three valuable points.
Spain are in second position in Pool F crossover points table with Australia topping the table.
In match 25, South Africa defeated France 3-1 at the same venue. Mustaphaa Cassiem netted two, and Dayaan Cassiem struck one to play a role in their side’s victory.
The top two teams from each second-stage pool will qualify for the semi-finals, while classification matches will determine the remaining positions.
Teams will carry forward the points earned against fellow qualifiers from the opening stage before playing two additional matches against new opponents.
