Permaul’s fifer puts West Indies in commanding position

GALLE: West Indian spinners annihilated Sri Lanka’s batting line-up on day 2 of the second test match here on Tuesday, dismissing them for 204.

West Indian openers, Kraigg Brathwaite and Jermaine Blackwood, got the team off to a good start, putting on a fifty-plus opening partnership. West Indies finished day-2 at 69/1 in response to Sri Lanka’s 204 as Blackwood, who was looking good and scoring at a decent rate was dismissed on 44 by Praveen Jayawickrama. The Carribeans’ innings will be resumed by Brathwaite (22*) and Nkrumah Bonner (1*).

Sri Lanka’s Pathum Nissanka and Oshada Fernando looked to stretch their stand after resuming at their side’s overnight score of 113/1, but Fernando was dismissed on 18 by Jomel Warrican. Nissanka was also dismissed without adding much to his overnight score of 62, as the batter was dismissed for 73 by Veerasammy Permaul when the side was 3-152.

Soon after, wickets began to fall at an alarming rate and no one else contributed significantly to the team’s total and they were eventually bowled out for 204. Lions lost their last eight wickets for just 52 runs.

Nissanka was the top-scorer for his team, with a 73-runs knock that included one six and five boundaries.

Permaul was the stand-out performer for the West Indies as the spinner bagged five-wickets haul and initiated the collapse. Warrican on the other hand was also very clinical as he dismissed four batters. Roston Chase dismissed one batter.
