New Zealand pacer Hamish Bennett to retire after 2021-22 season

AUCKLAND: The right-arm pacer Hamish Bennett has decided to retire from all forms of cricket after the conclusion of the 2021-22 season, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) announced.

Bennett, who represented New Zealand in 31 international matches has decided to bring the curtains down on a 17-years-long career. He has also represented the New Zealand U-19 side and the domestic teams of Wellington and Canterbury in his prolonged career.

“When I started out as a young kid bowling in the nets in Timaru, I never dreamed I would have gone on to enjoy the career that I’ve had,” Bennett said.

“It’s been an honour to represent my family and my country for New Zealand and those memories and experiences will be ones that I cherish and tell stories about for the rest of my life,” he concluded.

The right-arm pacer made his Test debut alongside the current New Zealand captain Kane Williamson against India in Ahmedabad. The pacer bowled 15 overs during his wicketless spell and could not get a chance to play another Test for the Kiwis.

He played his last international match against Bangladesh at Mirpur in the fourth T20I in September 2021. He also made his international debut against the same opposition at the same venue in 2010 and took three wickets on his debut in the fourth ODI.
