ISLAMABAD: Multan Sultans captain Mohammad Rizwan found himself in the headlines yet again due to his remarks at the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 10 captains’ press conference here on Thursday.
Rizwan, who also leads Pakistan in ODIs, has been under scrutiny following the national team’s disappointing run in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, where Pakistan failed to make it past the group stage.
The pressure only intensified after a 3-0 whitewash against New Zealand in the ODI series that followed.
Naturally, Rizwan was asked about the criticism surrounding Pakistan’s recent performances and his own role in the setup. The wicketkeeper-batter didn’t hold back and delivered a pointed and layered answer.
“Look, the real question is: what’s actually in my control and what isn’t?” Mohammad Rizwan said. “If you can sense that our faces reflect the disappointment, then our media certainly knows what’s going on and what’s not.”
“And I can say this openly, everyone knows what authority I have and what I don’t. Every individual in the setup has a defined role. I have mine as captain, the head coach has his, and the selectors have theirs. Everyone will be answerable for the decisions they’re responsible for.”
The wicketkeeper-batter emphasized that he is only accountable for matters within his control while highlighting that he has no influence over team selection, which is solely the responsibility of the selection committee.
“I’ll take responsibility for what falls under my authority, and likewise, the head coach and selectors will answer to the chairman for theirs,” Mohammad Rizwan added.
“The whole country knows that the selection committee itself has acknowledged their role that they pick the team, and we take it forward.”
