Harry Brook breaks silence on two-year IPL ban

Newly appointed England white-ball captain Harry Brook has responded to the reports suggesting that the BCCI has banned him from the Indian Premier League (IPL) after he chose to opt out of the ongoing 2025 season.

Brook, who became the frontrunner for the England captaincy after Jos Buttler stepped down after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, had announced his decision to withdraw from the IPL 2025 season.

The reason behind his decision was to “recharge” after what he described as the busiest period of his career so far. However, this decision reportedly led to the BCCI imposing a two-year ban on him from the tournament.

In response to the ban, Harry Brook was candid during his unveiling as England’s new white-ball captain at Headingley.

“They haven’t told me. But if I do get banned, fair play. That’s the rule they put in place, but I’m completely committed to playing cricket for England,” he said.

The 26-year-old, who has made a name for himself with his dynamic performances for England, further added that he was content with potentially losing money in the short term for the opportunity to represent his country.

“So to lose a little bit of money here and there, I’d take that any day to play for England,” Brook stated. “I won’t be playing any franchise cricket in the near future, and I’ll be prioritizing England and whatever games we have with them.”

Brook was clear about his priorities, saying: “This is my priority. England is the way forward for me, and franchise cricket can almost take a step back for a little while. At the end of the day, I enjoy playing cricket for England more than anything else.”

Having previously captained England during the ODI series against Australia in September and serving as vice-captain at the Champions Trophy, Brook’s first outing as the permanent England white-ball captain will come later this year.

The team will face the West Indies in three home T20Is and three ODIs at the end of May.
