DHAKA: Wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das has replaced Mehidy Hasan Miraz as Bangladesh’s ODI captain.
Litton, 31, was already leading the T20I side. His appointment means Bangladesh will now have two captains across three formats.
The decision was confirmed during a Board of Directors meeting at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Wednesday.
“I believe we should have two captains, and the board shares the same view,” said BCB President Tamim Iqbal.
He also confirmed Towhid Hridoy as Litton’s deputy in ODIs while explaining the notion behind the decision.
“There is nothing right or wrong about either approach, but we feel two captains make more sense, one for white-ball cricket and one for red-ball cricket.

That’s why we’ve decided to appoint Litton Das as the white-ball captain, while Najmul Hossain Shanto will continue as the red-ball captain. Towhid Hridoy will be the white-ball vice-captain, while the red-ball vice-captain remains unchanged (Mehidy is currently the Test vice-captain),” he explained.
The decision comes after Bangladesh’s ODI series defeat to Zimbabwe. Meanwhile, Najmul Hasan Shanto will continue to lead the Test side.
Under Mehidy’s leadership, Bangladesh won 10 out of 20 matches. His captaincy began on a sour note as the Tigers lost five of their first six games. However, the momentum shifted in Bangladesh’s favor as they clinched four consecutive series at home — West Indies, Pakistan, New Zealand, and a historic triumph against Australia.
Litton has previously captained Bangladesh in seven ODIs, including a 2-1 series victory over India in 2022. He also led the side against Afghanistan and New Zealand in 2023 while regular captains were unavailable.
Tamim also said the board would review performances every six months instead of making frequent changes.
