DUBAI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Wednesday penalized Pakistan fast-bowling duo Khurram Shahzad and Mohammad Abbas for breaching the Code of Conduct during the first Test against the West Indies in Tarouba.
Khurram was fined 15 percent of the match fee, while Abbas received an official reprimand.
The sanction comes under Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match.”
Additionally, Abbas and Shahzad each received one demerit point on their disciplinary records. This marks the first offense for both players in a 24-month period.

Khurram Shahzad was penalized for aggressive celebration after dismissing Shai Hope during the 17th over of the West Indies’ second innings. Meanwhile, Abbas was sanctioned for celebrating in an animated way after dismissing Jomel Warrican.
The sanctions were proposed by Jeff Crowe, a member of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. Both players accepted their offences, thus, avoiding a need for formal hearing. On-field umpires Alex Wharf and Richard Kettleborough and third umpire Jayaraman Madanagopal leveled the charges.
It is worth mentioning that, Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.
If a player receives four or more demerit points within a 24-month period, they are converted into suspension points, resulting in a ban.
