Australia ready for Cameron Green's trial on Pakistan tour

Australia head coach Andrew McDonald has backed all-rounder Cameron Green to fill the role of Glenn Maxwell ahead of the ODI series against Pakistan.

Ahead of the Pakistan tour, Andrew McDonald praised Cameron Green’s adaptability to bat in different positions, making a strong case to replace retired Maxwell, who has filled multiple roles for Australia over the past decade.

“I think he’s got the ability to play high up the order and low,” McDonald told reporters.

“He does have some power, and we saw that in that top-end series last year against South Africa, his ability to finish off that innings, and with the absence of Glenn Maxwell, we had that conversation,” he said.

He denied calling it an experiment but backed Green to take over Maxwell’s role in the 2027 ODI World Cup.

“The team that we are, we keep these things open. Experiment is not the right word, but we’ll look at different ways to play in the journey to the 2027 World Cup and where he fits exactly in that. We’ve got some options there because of his range of skills, but definitely the bowling is a big part of that,” the 44-year-old explained.

Despite his concerning form over the past year, the head coach backed the all-rounder to perform with the bat, noting that his bowling and fielding already demonstrate his overall value.

“He had a challenging summer. He didn’t perform to the level that he wanted to. I think people don’t appreciate the sum of all the parts that he brings as well,” he highlighted.

“We want him to average more with the bat. He wants to average more with the bat. But his fielding, his bowling, the package that he is, we feel he will come good. It’s just a matter of, okay, how we balance out the three formats as well,” Andrew McDonald concluded.

For the unversed, Australia are set to tour Pakistan for a three-match ODI series before heading to Bangladesh for a white-ball tour, where they will play the same number of ODIs and T20Is.

Green’s role is expected to come under the spotlight following a dip in form during the IPL 2026.

The series against Pakistan will begin on 30 May at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.
