Vaibhav Sooryavanshi wants to score double century in T20 cricket

India teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has set his sights on scoring a double century in T20 cricket, saying he wants to surpass former West Indies cricketer Chris Gayle’s record. 

The 15-year-old revealed his big ambition on former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen’s YouTube channel ‘The Switch’ when he was asked whether he enjoys his half-centuries.

“No, not that much (on celebrating 50s),” he replied.

He remarked that he wants to break Chris Gayle’s record of the highest individual score in the limited-overs format.

“I want to score 200 in T20s. I want to break Gayle’s record,” he said. “If I play 20 overs in any game, I definitely will break that record,” he added.

Currently, Gayle holds the record for the highest individual score in T20 cricket. The southpaw recorded the feat of scoring 175 in 2013, playing for RCB against Pune Warriors India.

Sooryavanshi has made headlines since debuting as the youngest IPL player at 14 last year. He has impressed with 583 runs in 14 matches at an average of 41.64 and a strike rate of 232.27, including one century and three fifties, with a highest score of 103.

For the unversed, Sooryavanshi became the youngest ever player to be bought ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Later that year, he made headlines in IPL after smashing a 35-ball ton. With his feat, the 14-year-old became the youngest centurion in men’s T20 cricket.

Turning out for the Rajasthan Royals in that season, he amassed 252 runs in seven matches at an astonishing strike rate of 206, including a century and one fifty.

His rise continued in the India U19’s World Cup-winning campaign earlier this year, finishing as the highest run-getter for his team, including a 175 off 80 balls in the final.

In IPL 2026, he has so far managed 583 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 232, including a century and three half-centuries.
