Ashwin likely to join Indian squad in England ahead of warm-up match

NEW DELHI: Indian veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who was tested positive for the COVID-19, is now likely to join the squad in the United Kingdom (UK) ahead of their warm-up match, scheduled on June 24, Indian media reported.

The right-arm spinner is currently undergoing quartine and will only join the Indian squad after meeting all the protocol requirements.

According to the details, off-spinner Jayant Yadav is considered a possible replacement in case Ashwin does not make a timely recovery, Hindustan Times reported.

Ashwin was a member of the initial India team that toured England for the first four Tests last year but failed to make it to the Playing XI in any of the contests. His brilliant performance in the Test against Sri Lanka in March may result in him booking his spot in the side, in which the right-arm spinner bagged six wickets.

Head coach Rahul Dravid and batters Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant have joined the rest of the squad in Leicester after the conclusion of the home T20I series against South Africa.

Indian vice-captain KL Rahul, on the other hand, who was ruled out of the England tour as he will be travelling to Germany for the treatment of his groin injury. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are yet to announce the replacement for the opener.
