Zimbabwe to participate in T20I tri-series after Afghanistan withdrawal

LAHORE: Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has reportedly accepted the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) invitation to participate in the upcoming T20I tri-nation series after the withdrawal of Afghanistan.

The series, now featuring Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Zimbabwe, will be played from November 17 to 29 across Rawalpindi and Lahore.

According to the revised schedule, the opening match between Pakistan and Zimbabwe will take place on November 17 in Rawalpindi, followed by the Sri Lanka-Zimbabwe encounter on November 19.

The remaining five matches, including the final, will be staged at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.

Afghanistan’s withdrawal was reportedly linked to cross-border unrest earlier this month, which tragically claimed the lives of three local cricketers in the Urgun district.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) stated that the players were travelling from Urgun to Sharana in Paktika province, near the Pakistan border, to play a friendly match when the incident occurred.

Despite the setback, the PCB reaffirmed its commitment to hosting the tri-series as planned, underscoring its determination to maintain a consistent flow of international cricket on home soil.

A PCB spokesperson told a local news outlet on Saturday that while Afghanistan’s exit was unfortunate, the event will proceed according to the original schedule.

The board had been exploring potential replacements, with Zimbabwe now officially stepping in.
