Yasir Sultan wins bronze at Asian Throwing Championship

Pakistan’s javelin thrower Yasir Sultan bagged a bronze medal with a season-best performance at the Asian Throwing Championship in South Korea on Friday.

Sri Lanka’s Pathirage claimed the gold medal with a throw of 82.05m.

Meanwhile, Sultan, Pakistan’s lone representative at the event, recorded a throw of 77.43 metres on his sixth and final attempt to seal third place.

His early throws included distances of 75.79m, 72.57m, and 72.88m, while two efforts were ruled foul.

National coach Fayyaz Bukhari accompanied him during the competition.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem was absent from the championship as he continues his recovery from a recent calf muscle surgery in Cambridge.

He has begun light training as part of his rehabilitation but will not feature in the upcoming Diamond League events in Poland (August 16) and Switzerland (August 27).

Nadeem, who stunned the world last year by winning Olympic gold with a record-breaking 92.97m throw in Paris, has since cemented his status as one of the sport’s elite.

He also clinched gold at the Asian Athletics Championship last month with an 86.40m effort.

He previously rose to prominence with his gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, followed by a silver at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest.
