COLOMBO: India batter Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka fast bowler Asitha Fernando have been sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) following an on-field altercation during the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) Ground.
Both players were found guilty of breaching Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which covers inappropriate physical contact with a player, support staff member, umpire, match referee or another person during an international match.
Jaiswal and Fernando were each fined 25 per cent of their match fees and received one demerit point for the offence.
The ICC confirmed that neither player had committed a similar offence during the previous 24 months.
For the unversed, the incident took place during the 17th over of India’s innings on the opening day after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal.

The India batter approached the Sri Lankan pacer and the pair exchanged words before Fernando moved his head towards Jaiswal. Jaiswal then leaned towards Fernando, resulting in head-to-head contact between the two players.
Both players admitted the offence and accepted the sanctions proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, meaning no formal hearing was required.
Meanwhile, India remain in a strong position in the second Test despite rain disrupting play on the second day in Colombo.
India reached 475-8 before the weather brought the second session to an early close, with Dhruv Jurel unbeaten on 95 and five runs away from completing his second Test century.
India lead the two-match series 1-0 after securing a comprehensive 165-run victory in the opening Test in Galle.
