Women’s WC: England outclass Bangladesh to book semi-final berth

WELLINGTON: England’s all-rounder Sophia Dunkley shone with a magnificent knock of 67 runs before Charlie Dean and Sophie Ecclestone took three wickets each to propel their side outclass Bangladesh by 100 runs and book a semi-final berth in the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup 2022, here on Sunday.

In the first match of the double-header Sunday, the defending champions England sealed an emphatic 100-runs victory over Bangladesh and qualified for the semi-finals of the mega event.

Batting first, England get to a commendable total of 234/6 in the allotted 50 overs, thanks to the brilliant knock of Dunkley, who led the way with a brilliant 67. The right-handed batter faced 72 balls and smashed eight boundaries.

Earlier, the middle-order batter Nat Sciver also chipped in and followed back with her 40. The wicket-keeper batter Amy Jones and Tammy Beaumont, on the other hand, scored 31 and 33 respectively.

For Bangladesh, Salma Khatun starred with two wickets, while Lata Mondal, Fahima Khatun, Ritu Moni, and Jahanara Alam made one scalp each.

Set to chase 235, Bangladesh bundled out on 134, following a combined effort from the English bowlers with Dean and Ecclestone leading the way with three each.

For Bangladesh, the openers Shamima Sultana and Sharmin Akhter scored 23 each, while Lata fought hard and led the way with her gritty knock of 30.

The rest of the Bangladesh batters could not contribute significantly in the run chase and as a result, the side fell short of 100 runs in the run chase.
