West Indies thump Zimbabwe to secure 11th Place in the ICC U19 WC

TRINIDAD: West Indies sealed an emphatic victory over Zimbabwe by eight wickets in the 11th Place Play-Off of the ICC Under-19 World Cup, here on Monday.

Set to chase 257, the home side sealed the victory comfortably in the end despite a poor start; losing their first wicket for just one run. The top-order batters – Teddy Bishop and Kevin Wickham batted brilliantly and partnered strongly to anchor the run chase.

The pair added an astonishing 194-runs partnership for the second as both Bishop and Wickham scored terrific centuries. Wickham fell short after scoring 104, while Bishop remained unbeaten with his 112 off 121 balls, laced with 11 boundaries and a six.

For Zimbabwe, Brian Bennett and Matthew Schonken shared one wicket apiece.

Batting first, Zimbabwe posted a decent total of 256 runs, thanks to their middle-order heroics. After having an average start to their inning, middle-order batters Brian and David Bennett played astonishing knocks to power the side to a commendable total.

Brian scored 62, while David top-scored with 77 off 105 balls, laced with seven boundaries and three sixes. Connor Mitchell’s stunning cameo of 42 off just 26 balls, powered the side to 256/4 in the allotted 50 overs.

For the home side, Johann Lyne bagged two wickets, while Giovonte Depeiza made one scalp.

In the Plate final of the ICC U19 World Cup, United Arab Emirates (UAE) crushed Ireland by eight wickets and 144 balls to spare.

Set to chase a paltry 123, UAE chased down the target in 26 overs. Kai Smith and Punya Mehra played exceptional knocks to assist the side to the victory. Smith fell one short of his magnificent half-century, while Mehra remained unbeaten for his 48.

For Ireland, Matthew Humphreys and Jamie Forbes could manage to take one wicket apiece.

Batting first, the Irish batting line-up failed completely and could only score 122. Jack Dickson scored a gritty 40, as the wicketkeeper batter received no support from the other end. Dickson faced 83 balls; smashing one boundary and two sixes.

For UAE, Jash Giyanani, Adhitya Shetty, and Dhruv Prashar took two wickets each, while Aayan Afzal Khan and Ali Naseer struck out a batter each.
