West Indies stun Bangladesh with six ducks on opening day of first Test

ANTIGUA: Bangladesh put on a dismal show of batting to share an undesired record for most ducks when six of the players went without scoring in their tragic first inning of 103 runs against the West Indies on the opening day of the first Test, here on Thursday.

West Indies firmed their grip on the match with an astonishing start provided by the bowlers as Jayden Seales and Alzarri Joseph led the bowling attack with three wickets each. Kemar Roach and Kyle Mayers also contributed with the two.

Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hassan looked in sublime form as he refused to bend down before Windies bowlers and contributed with half of the total runs, after a collapse of the top-order when six of the batters were out on 45.

The skipper continued with his slog sweeps at one end while wickets continued to fall from the other. He finally succumbed to Joseph’s delivery as he mistimed the ball which went straight into Roach’s hands.

Shakib remained the top scorer for his side with 51 runs, laced with six boundaries and a six. Followed by the opener Tamim Iqbal who scored 29 runs.

Meanwhile, six of the batter were sent back to the pavilion without scoring, including opener Mahmudal Hassan Joy, middle-order batters Najmul Hossain Shanto and Momin ul Haq, wicket-keeper Nurul Hasan, and tail-enders Mustafizur Rehman and Khaled Ahmed.

After wrapping up Bangladesh halfway through the second session, openers gave a humble start of 42 runs to the West Indian first inning before pacer Mastafizur Rehman bowled out John Campbell on 24.

West Indies skipper Kraig Braithwaite anchored the first inning with 42 not out while middle-order batter Raymon Reifer was also dismissed on 11 by right-arm pacer Ebadot Hossain.

The hosts will try to build a strong lead when they resume the second day’s play from 95/2 with the skipper still on the crease.
