Kyle Mayers replaces injured Brandon King in West Indies T20 World Cup squad

West Indies opening batter Brandon King will miss the rest of the T20 World Cup 2024 after suffering a side strain, meanwhile, fellow opener Kyle Mayers has been named his replacement in the squad.

King suffered the injury while batting in the Super Eight clash against England, which West Indies lost by eight wickets.

The right-handed batter gave his team a quick start with a 13-ball 23, which included three boundaries and a massive 101-metre six off Reece Topley.

However, on his 13th ball, he crumbled after coming down the pitch to hit Sam Curran for a boundary. He received brief medical attention before being forced to retire hurt.

He was replaced by Shimron Hetmyer on the field as a substitute fielder.

After the MRI scans, it was confirmed that King could play no further part in the tournament, after which the ICC Event Technical Committee approved Mayers as his replacement.

“The Event Technical Committee of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 has approved left-handed batter Kyle Mayers as a replacement for Brandon King in the West Indies squad,” an ICC release read.

“Mayers, who has played 37 T20Is, was named as a replacement after King was ruled out due to a side strain. Mayers is expected to join the squad on Saturday.”

The left-handed batter has scored 727 runs for West Indies at a strike rate of 140.61.
