Virat Kohli becomes highest run-scorer in men’s T20 World Cups

ADELAIDE: India’s veteran batter Virat Kohli has outrun Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene to become the highest run-scorer in the history of ICC Men’s T20 World Cups.

Jayawardene had occupied the record for almost eight years as the right-handed batter topped the chart in the 2014 edition with a total of 1016 runs.

Kohli, however, on Wednesday, broke the record amid his side’s fourth Super 12s fixture against Bangladesh. The right-handed batter amassed the milestone with an astounding batting average of 80 and a decent strike rate of 130.

In the seventh over of India’s innings against Bangladesh, Kohli flicked Taskin Ahmed at mid-wicket for a single, giving him the run that put him above Jayawardene.

Kohli just took 23 innings to become the highest run-scorer in the tournament history and has scored 12 half-centuries, while Jayawardene played 31 innings to set the record.

The Sri Lankan batter, however, faced fewer balls (754) than Kohli (773).

Kohli is currently unbeaten at 31 off 27 deliveries, with his side scoring 119/3 in 14 overs.
