New captain named as India unveil squad for Sri Lanka T20Is

NEW DELHI: Right-handed batter Suryakumar Yadav has been named India’s T20I captain as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced squads for the upcoming white-ball tour to Sri Lanka.

Yadav, who has represented India in 68 T20Is, has a brief captaincy record in the international format, having led his national team in the series against South Africa and Australia last year.

His captaincy stint, however, came in the absence of key players, but has now been given the reigns of a full-fledged team, featuring the likes of Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya.

Meanwhile, batting prodigy Shubman Gill, who led an inexperienced Indian side to a 4-1 victory over Zimbabwe, will serve as the vice-captain in both T20I and ODI series.

Star pacer and ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 Player of the Tournament, Jasprit Bumrah has been given a rest from the white-ball tour to Sri Lanka while Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will feature in the ODI series.

For the unversed, India’s white-ball tour to Sri Lanka will mark their newly-appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir’s first assignment after assuming the role earlier this month.

The tour will mark India’s first visit to Sri Lanka for a bilateral series since 2021.

Last week, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) unveiled the schedule of India’s white-ball tour to Sri Lanka, comprising a three-match ODI and T20I series.

According to the itinerary announced by the SLC, India will touch down in Sri Lanka on July 22 while the T20I series is scheduled to commence on July 26 with the second and third T20Is set to be played on July 27 and 29 respectively.

All three T20Is will take place at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Pallekele before the action shifts to Colombo, where the ODI series will take place.

The three-match ODI series between India and Sri Lanka will kick off on August 1 while the remaining fixtures will be played on August 4 and 7. All three ODIs will be held at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium here.
