Sri Lanka’s Kusal Mendis walks off the field complaining of chest pain

DHAKA: Sri Lanka’s right-handed batter Kusal Mendis walked off the field holding his chest minutes before the lunch of the opening day of the second Test between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, here on Monday.

Mendis, who was fielding in the slip cordon, pulled up in the 23rd over of the match and was taken off the field after the physios briefly checked on him.

The wicket-keeper batter has been hospitalized as a precautionary check-up and according to the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Manager Mahinda Halangoda, the ECG reports of the player have “come out clear”, while he is still under observation in a local hospital here.

“The ECG reports of Kusal Mendis have come out clear, the doctors suspect muscle spasms as the reason for his discomfort, while he is still under observation,” Halangoda was quoted saying by ESPN Cricinfo.

As per the initial update, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) doctor Manzur Hossain Chowdhury stated that Mendis was taken to the hospital for proper diagnosis and better management while he was suffering from dehydration leading into the match.

“Kusal Mendis had to be taken to the hospital for proper diagnosis and better management. He was suffering from dehydration leading into the match, which could be a reason behind his discomfort,” ESPN Cricinfo quoted Manzur.

It’s worth noting that Mendis’ participation in the Dhaka Test and the duration of his stay in the hospital are unclear.
