Will Smeed smashes first century of The Hundred

BIRMINGHAM: Right-handed young batter Will Smeed registered himself in The Hundred record book as he smashed the first century of the competition and powered his side Birmingham Phoenix to beat Southern Braves by 53 runs.

In the eighth match of the ongoing second edition of The Hundred, Smeed thrashed the Braves’ bowlers and sailed the ball all over the park to bolster the home side to a competitive total of 176/4 in the allotted hundred deliveries.

The right-handed batter played an astounding knock of 101 runs off a mere 50 deliveries, laced with eight boundaries and six sixes and remained unbeaten as the Phoenix finished with a decent total on the board.

Following his remarkable knock, Smeed became the first batter in The Hundred history to amass a triple-figure mark.

In the run chase, right-arm pacer Henry Brookes then attempted to match his teammate Smeed’s brilliance as he bagged the first five wicket-haul of the competition and added to the misery of the Braves, who fell 53 runs short while chasing 177.

Brookes conceded just 25 runs off 20 deliveries and led the way for the Phoenix with five wickets, while Australian pacer Kane Richardson followed with three wickets.

The brilliance of Smeed and Brookes allowed the Phoenix to register their first victory in the ongoing second edition of The Hundred.
