India T20I captain Shreyas Iyer has brushed aside the growing speculation surrounding the impending debut of teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, insisting outside opinions will not influence team selection ahead of the opening T20I against England.
The 15-year-old prodigy has been at the centre of intense debate after remaining on the sidelines during India’s 2-0 T20I series defeat to Ireland despite earning his maiden national call-up.
Sooryavanshi forced his way into the squad following a sensational Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 campaign with Rajasthan Royals, where he amassed 776 runs in 16 innings at a staggering strike rate of 237.30 to finish as the tournament’s leading run-scorer and claim the Orange Cap.
His performances prompted several former cricketers to call for an immediate international debut, but the teenager is still waiting for his first appearance in India’s colours.

Addressing the media ahead of Wednesday’s series opener at the Riverside Ground, Iyer insisted he has paid little attention to the public discussion surrounding the youngster.
“I am not seeing anything, really don’t, neither following any news outlets nor any form of social media, not hearing anything,” Iyer said.
India retained the same top-order combination of Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan throughout the Ireland series, despite all three struggling to make significant contributions with the bat.
The skipper reiterated that selections would continue to be based on the team’s overall performance rather than public opinion or external pressure.
“Every individual playing in the team has performed. It’s not just one individual who has done it,” he added.
