Sharif, Ali qualify for CWG Wrestling semi-finals in respective categories

BIRMINGHAM: Pakistan wrestlers Muhammad Sharif Tahir and Ali Asad shone in the quarterfinals of Men’s Freestyle Wrestling 74kg and 57kg respectively in the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022.

Sharif, who thrashed Tonga’s John Vake 11-0 in the Round of 16 clash, further marched in the competition as he produced a similar outcome in his quarter-final bout against Canada’s Jasmit Singh Phulka, defeating the latter 10-0.

Following his qualification in the semi-finals, Sharif has now moved one victory away from confirming at least a silver in the 74kg category.

Besides Sharif, another wrestler Ali pounded his Namibian opponent Romio Ricardo Goliath 10-0 in the quarter-final of the 57kg weight category and moved within a victory to confirm another silver medal for Pakistan.

Earlier, national wrestlers Inam Butt and Zaman Anwar lost in their respective gold medal bouts to claim a silver medal apiece for Pakistan.

It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan has claimed a total of five medals in the ongoing Games as Shah Hussain Shah claimed bronze in Judo on Wednesday. Whereas, weightlifter Muhammad Nooh Dastgir Butt remained the only athlete thus far to win a gold medal for the country in the ongoing global event.
