Scotland stuns West Indies despite Matthews' heroics in ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier

LAHORE: Scotland secured a thrilling victory over West Indies by 11 runs in their opening match of the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier here at Lahore City Cricket Association Ground (LCCA) on Wednesday.

Chasing a total of 245, West Indies were bowled out for 233 in 46.2 overs.

West Indies skipper Hayley Matthews remained unbeaten with her valiant knock of 114 off 113 balls, featuring 14 fours.

The 27-year-old batter battled through cramps despite the sweltering conditions and went on to score an outstanding century.

Following an early wicket in the very second over, Matthews and Zaida James steadied the West Indian innings with a partnership of 113 runs.

James was dismissed for a sluggish 45 off 89 balls, with five fours and one six.

West Indies were 120-2 in 26.5 overs before Scottish bowlers triggered a collapse.

Apart from the above-mentioned batters, there was not a significant contribution from the West Indian middle order.

For Scotland, Katherine Fraser shined with the ball, taking three wickets for 50 runs in her 10-overs quota. Abtaha Maqsood and Chloe Abel also contributed to the bowling charts with two wickets apiece.

Earlier, after being invited to bat, Scotland were bowled out for 244 runs in their 50 overs.

Sarah Bryce remained the top-scorer with her 55 off 56 balls, featuring six fours, while Megan McColl supported her well with 45 off 44 deliveries.

For West Indies, Hayley Matthews performed excellently with the ball as well, taking four wickets in 10 overs.

Despite being on the losing side, Matthews was awarded the ‘Player of the Match’ for her all-round brilliance.

She also became just the fourth woman ever to take four wickets and score a hundred in an ODI.
