LAHORE: Salman Ali Agha is being seriously considered for Pakistan’s Test captaincy as uncertainty continues to grow over the future of current skipper Shan Masood, sources revealed on Friday.
The development comes after Pakistan’s disappointing Test performances recently, including consecutive series whitewashes against Bangladesh, intensifying pressure on Masood’s leadership.
According to sources, communication between Masood and several players had become minimal during the Bangladesh tour. Sources added that during the team’s return journey home, the Pakistan captain largely remained occupied with family members and had limited interaction with teammates.
Sources have indicated that, in light of Pakistan’s ongoing difficulties in Test cricket, the cricket board is considering potential leadership changes.
Salman Ali Agha has emerged as a strong contender to take over if Babar Azam steps down or is removed from his position as captain.
Agha currently serves as Pakistan’s T20I captain and was recently appointed vice-captain of the ODI side for the upcoming home series against Australia.
Meanwhile, Shan Masood, who was appointed Pakistan’s Test captain in 2023, has led the side in 16 matches so far. Under his leadership, Pakistan have managed four victories while suffering 12 defeats.
Pakistan are not scheduled to play another Test until July, when they tour the West Indies for a two-match series.
