Ruben Amorim opens up after Manchester United shock League Cup exit

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has shared his thoughts after his side’s exit from the League Cup, following a humiliating defeat to fourth-tier Grimsby on Wednesday.

Manchester United crashed out of the race in the Carabao Cup second round on a penalty shootout.

United made a comeback in the match after trailing 2-0; however, they lost 12-11 on penalties in the final moments of the game.

The Carabao Cup exit also puts scrutiny on Ruben Amorim as the 20-time English champions faced their worst results in the club’s history.

Last season, Manchester United finished in 15th position, which was their worst league campaign spot since being relegated in 1974.

Following the defeat, Ruben said he could not accept the defeat after making so many changes.

“I am shocked because we are in the moment when we make a lot of changes. We try to fight a lot of things but then when we have these moments, we need to show up,” he said.

“If we don’t show up, you can feel that something has to change, and you are not going to change 22 players again,” he added.

The 40-year-old mentioned the key moments in the game, praising Grimsby for playing exceptionally well.

“It doesn’t matter if we recover [from 2-0 down] or not. It’s the signs the team made during the game. The beginning of the game.

“I know that the best team won, the only team that was on the pitch. The best players lose, because one team can win against any group of players,” he said while praising the opponent.

He mentioned the Manchester United players’ attitude ambiguously; however, it was unclear what Ruben Amorim meant to say.

“I think the team and the players spoke really loud today. That’s it. We lost. The best team won. It’s really clear what they spoke. Let’s move on from this day. I think it was really clear for everybody what happened today,” he concluded.
