ANTIGUA: Cricket West Indies (CWI) has named Roston Chase as their new Test team captain ahead of the series against Australia and India.
The decision came after Kraigg Brathwaite stepped down as national skipper. Brathwaite exited from the role after squaring off a series against Pakistan 1-1.
Kraigg Brathwaite’s captaincy era was notable for leading the young West Indies team and finding ways to win in different conditions with a growing pool of fast and spin bowlers.
His Notable performances included a 1-0 home series win over England in 2022, the Gabba Test win of January 2024, and a 1-1 draw in Pakistan in Brathwaite’s last series in charge, in January 2025.
Cricket West Indies announced Chase’s appointment via X, formerly Twitter.
“The appointment was unanimously approved by the CWI Board of Directors during its meeting held today, May 16, 2025. Congratulations, Roston – WI are rallying behind you!”, the caption read.
Roston, who hasn’t played a Test match for West Indies for the last two years, first assignment will be West Indies’ upcoming three-match home series against Australia between June and July. He has previously led West Indies in one ODI and one T20I.
The all-rounder has plenty of experience as he represented the West Indies in 49 Test matches. Chase has scored over 2265 runs at an average of 26.33 with the help of five centuries and 11 half-centuries.
Additionally, he has 85 wickets to his name with handy right-arm off breaks.
The 33-year-old Roston is currently in Ireland along with the rest of his West Indies colleagues for a three-match ODI series against the hosts.
The series will be followed by another three-match ODI rubber against England later this month.
