Former India wicket-keeper jokes Pant should share match fees with Jurel

LONDON: Former India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik had a cheeky on-air suggestion during Day 4 of the ongoing third Test at Lord’s, quipping that Rishabh Pant should consider sharing his match fees with Dhruv Jurel.

The light-hearted remark came as Jurel impressed behind the stumps, taking over wicketkeeping duties under the new ICC regulations, which now allow like-for-like substitutes in the event of injuries, including wicketkeepers.

Pant had injured his left index finger while attempting a catch off Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling early on Day 1. Though he initially continued after treatment, the pain forced him to leave the field in the next over.

Jurel replaced Pant and made an immediate impact by taking a sharp catch to dismiss Ollie Pope off the first delivery after Tea.

He finished England’s first innings with three catches and maintained solid glove work throughout, particularly under tricky conditions that included variable bounce and late swing.

“Rishabh Pant should share his match fees with Dhruv Jurel,” Dinesh Karthik joked on commentary, acknowledging the youngster’s efforts and seamless transition into the role.

Despite not taking the field after his injury, Rishabh Pant returned to bat in India’s first innings and played a gritty knock of 74 off 112 balls, showing characteristic resolve.

As things stand, England were bowled out for 192 in their second innings, leaving India with a 193-run target to win the third Test at Lord’s.

However, India struggled to get a solid start, losing four quick wickets for just 54 runs.

KL Rahul, who scored a century in the first innings, will resume his innings on 33, with Pant expected to join him at the crease as they start the final day of the Lord’s Test.

It’s important to note that the five-match series is currently tied at 1-1.
