LAHORE: Sikandar Raza and Daryl Mitchell’s sublime knocks powered Lahore Qalandars to a five-wicket win over Multan Sultans in the 16th match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10 here at Gaddafi Cricket Stadium on Saturday.
Lahore Qalandars chased down the 186-run total on the loss of five wickets in the 19th over, thanks to impressive knocks from Sikandar Raza and Daryl Mitchell.
The home team’s chase started on a shaky note as the emerging batter, Mohammad Naeem (6), failed to impress once again and was dismissed in the second over.
Despite an early wicket, Qalandars’ innings continued as Fakhar Zaman formed a brief 33-run partnership with Abdullah Shafique, advancing the score to 45 in just 6 overs. The left-hander led the charge with 28 runs off 22 balls, belting Akif Javed for two sixes in an over before getting dismissed.
Multan Sultans sensed a comeback after Fakhar’s wicket; however, Abdullah Shafique and Daryl Mitchell forged a vital 49-run stand to lift them out of trouble. Qalandars were cruising at 94-2 in 11.1 overs, but it was Ubaid Shah’s double-wicket over that brought the visiting team back into the game.
The right-arm pacer struck twice to remove Shafique and Sam Billings. Abdullah Shafique went after scoring 34 off 25 balls, striking two fours and an equal number of sixes, while Billings was gone without scoring.
The game seemed to be heading Multan’s way in the 12th over, with Qalandars requiring 95 off 48 balls. However, Sikandar Raza and Daryl Mitchell created an 89-run partnership that took the game away from Multan Sultans.
Both batters played briskly, scoring a flurry of boundaries in each over. Daryl was dismissed on the second last ball of the 18th over, after scoring an enterprising 64 off 38 balls, with the help of four sixes and four elegant fours.
Sikandar Raza remained unbeaten on 41 runs from 20 balls, hitting two fours and four sixes, and struck the winning runs on the last ball of the 18th over.
For Multan Sultans, Ubaid Shah was the stand-out bowler, taking two wickets in his four overs, while Josh Little, Akif Javed, and Mohammad Hasnain bagged one wicket each.
Earlier, Mohammad Rizwan and Kamran Ghulam’s determined half-centuries powered Multan Sultans to a formidable total against Lahore Qalandars.
Put into bat, Multan Sultans posted 185 for the loss of three wickets in their allocated 20 overs.
Multan Sultans were off to a quiet start, scoring only 19 runs in the first five overs, until the sixth over in which Haris Rauf gave 11 runs despite taking a wicket. He dismissed Yasir Khan, who scored 24 off 18 balls, including a six and a four in the same over.
Following the wicket, Usman Khan partnered with Mohammad Rizwan for a brief partnership of 21, before the former’s dismissal on the score of 18. Usman scored 18 off 14 deliveries with the help of two fours and a six.
Lahore Qalandars continued to pressure the visitors by dismissing Shai Hope, who was out for 9 at the halfway stage of the innings.
However, it was Kamran Ghulam’s and Mohammad Rizwan’s partnership that shifted the momentum. The duo formed a formidable 115-run stand on 59 balls, taking Sultans to an impressive total.
