KARACHI: The action-packed GFS Karachi Open Squash Championship 2022 kicked off today here, Pakistan’s Tayyab Aslam, Asim Khan, Ashab Irfan, and Amna Fayyaz advanced to the next round after securing victories in their respective matches.
The main match of the star-studded event saw Pakistan’s number one Tayyab securing a comfortable victory against Egypt’s Yahya. The nation’s top-ranked player beat Yahya by 10-12, 11-9, 11-9, 12-10.
In another match, Asim stunned England’s Declan in a close contest by 9-11, 6-11, 12-10, 11-8, 11-8 after being two games and match-ball down. He will now face as he is due to face former world champion Karim Abdel Gawad of Egypt on day two of the event.
Pakistan’s wildcard entry Ashab Irfan caused another upset on the opening day as he beat Spain’s Bernat Jaume by 8-11, 11-9, 13-11, 11-7.
In the women’s event, Pakistan’s Amna Fayyaz registered a win to proceed to the second round, while Mariam Malik, Anam Mustafa Aziz, Rushna Mehboob, Saima Shoukat, and Zaynab Khan suffered first-round defeats in their respective matches.
Day two of the GFS Karachi Open Squash Championship 2022 will feature all top eight seeds.
The main match on day two in the men’s event will see former world champion Karim Abdel Gawad, number two seed Youssef Soliman, and the US number one Shahjahan Khan in action. Whereas, in the women’s event, the number one and number two seed of France Enora Villard and Marie Stephan will compete in their respective first matches.
