KARACHI: In an interview, Pakistan’s star boxer and WBC Silver World Champion revealed that he was compelled to bribe Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF) officials for sponsorship contracts.
Waseem made shocking revelations regarding the situation of professional boxing in Pakistan while narrating his journey from the streets of Quetta to the world arena during an interview.
“In order to gain the sponsorship, President PBF pushed me to sign a contract stipulating that I would have to pay 20% of whatever amount I received, be it match fees or monthly allowance,” Waseem said.
“I had no choice but to pay the bribe as I was afraid they would ruin my career, as they had thousands of other promising fighters before me,” he added.
Following this, the star boxer requested the PM Imran Khan to look into this matter and save the careers of upcoming boxers.
In the interview, Waseem also discussed his path from battling hardships in his early boxing career to capturing the WBC Silver championship.
Wasim is currently the top-ranked WBA boxer in the fly-weight category. He is also the only Pakistani who crowned two-time world boxing champion.
