Nigeria thrash New Zealand to claim first win in FIFA U-17 Women’s WC

GOA: Nigeria displayed utter domination in their second fixture of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup as they thwarted New Zealand 4-0 to register their maiden triumph of the mega event.

Nigeria, fresh from their disappointing 2-1 loss to Germany, entered the field and displayed utter domination over their opposition.

Omowunmi Bello then soon converted her side’s domination into a goal in the 16th minute as she guided Tunmininu Adeshina’s cross with a powerful header to hand her side an early 1-0 lead.

Miracle Usani fired a fairly harmless cross into Fern’s goal area, however, confusion between Feinberg-Danieli and Manaia Elliot resulted in the defender deflecting the ball past the keeper’s expected reach.

Usani, as a result, cherished her second goal of the mega event.

Nigeria maintained their dominance over New Zealand in the second half, repeatedly testing their defence as Ajakaye and Adeshina hit the crossbar and side-netting, respectively.

However, Taiwo Afolabi was unstoppable in the 75th minute. Her 25-yard piledriver whistled beyond Feinberg Danieli’s jump and crashed into the net to enhance Nigeria’s lead.

Edidiong Etim’s trike in the stoppage time proved to be a cherry on top for Nigeria, who finished their domination over New Zealand with a comprehensive 4-0 triumph.

Meanwhile, the Group A fixture between Brazil and the United States of America (USA) ended in a 1-1 draw.

Brazil’s Ana Firmino struck in the 37th minute to neutralize USA’s Nicollette Kiorpes’ 33rd-minute strike and prevented her side from the first defeat.
