DUBAI: Nepal’s wicketkeeper batter Aasif Sheikh bagged the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award for the Year 2022 for his decision not to run out Ireland’s Andy McBrine amid the Quadrangular series in Oman in February 2022.
In the 19th over of Ireland’s innings, Mark Adair went for a big heave over leg-side on the third delivery but the ball hit his leg and dropped towards the leg side. The bowler ran towards the ball to retrieve it but collided with McBrine in the process.
The collision resulted in McBrine tripping and falling halfway on the pitch and Kamal Singh Airee quickly got to the ball and cannoned it towards Aasif, at which point McBrine got back up but was well short of his crease.
However, Aasif decided not to dislodge the bails, a gesture that received immense praise from cricket fans worldwide.
Ireland then went on to post 127 and Nepal fell 17 runs short as they were bowled out for just 111.
Following this, Aasif became the first player from Nepal to win the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award.
