Former South Africa pacer Morne Morkel has been appointed as the bowling coach of the India men’s cricket team.
Jay Shah, the secretary of the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) confirmed the appointment on Wednesday.
“Yes, Morne Morkel has been appointed as the bowling coach of the senior Indian men’s team,” Jay Shah confirmed to PTI.
The former South African pacer was rumoured to replace Paras Mhambrey as the bowling coach ever since Gautam Gambhir took over as the country’s head coach.
Gambhir recommended Morkel to join his coaching staff, having previously worked with South African during his time at Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Lucknow Super Giants.
Morne Morkel previously served as the bowling coach of the Pakistan men’s cricket team from July 2023 to November 2023. However, he resigned following a disastrous ICC ODI World Cup 2023 campaign in India.
He has also worked with the New Zealand team at the Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 and Namibia at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.
Prior to that, he had a successful 12-year-long career, where he took a total of 544 wickets from 86 Tests, 117 ODIs and 44 T20Is.
