SA vs ZIM: Quinton de Kock’s heroics in vain as rain washes out play

HOBART: South African wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock’s quickfire knock of 18-ball 47 not out went in vain as their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 Super 12s fixture against Zimbabwe was called off due to uninterrupted rain.

Set to chase 80 in nine overs, South African opener de Kock launched an attack on the Zimbabwean bowlers from the very first over and set the foundation of the run chase as he scored 23 runs in the first over.

The rain then interrupted once again in the second over consequently causing the target to be revised as 64 in seven overs.

The wicketkeeper batter continued to charge the Zimbabwean bowlers and led his side to 51/0 in just three overs but the rain intervened again, forcing the match to be called off.

Quinton de Kock remained unbeaten with his blistering 47 off 18, laced with eight boundaries and a six, while his opening partner Temba Bavuma could face only two deliveries and scored as many runs.

Zimbabwean all-rounder scripted an astonishing fight for his team after a dreadful start and bolstered the side to put on a commendable total after the contest was reduced to nine overs per side.

Batting first, Zimbabwe suffered an enthralling attack from the South African pace attack which halted them to 19/4 in the fourth over.

Following the slump, Madhevere and Milton Shumba stitched a valiant fifth-wicket partnership and added 60 runs in just 32 deliveries.

Shumba who played the anchoring role with a 20-ball 18 fell on the final delivery of the innings to Anrich Nortje.

Madhevere, on the other hand, top-scored for Zimbabwe with an unbeaten 35 off just 18 balls with the help of four boundaries and a six.

Lungi Ngidi led the South African bowling attack with two wickets while Wayne Parnell and Nortje struck out a batter each.
