West Indian batter Lendl Simmons retires from international cricket

SAINT JOHN’S: Right-handed West Indian batter Lendl Simmons has announced to hang his boots from international cricket with immediate effect.

Simmons, who represented the West Indies in 144 matches across all the formats, has decided to draw curtains on his prolonged career, that embarked in 2006 against Pakistan.

In his decorated career, the right-handed explosive batter scored 3736 runs including two centuries in ODI cricket.

Simmons’ highest score of 122, came against Bangladesh in Mirpur in 2011. The 37-year-old, however, was exclusively seen in T20Is in recent times.

The right-handed batter aided the West Indies to lift the 2016 T20 World Cup title with his match-winning 82-run knock against the hosts India in the semi-final at Wankhede Stadium before the eventual champions thrashed England in the final at the back of an astounding batting display from Carlos Brathwaite.

The world cup-winning player has, however, clarified that he will continue to play franchise cricket.
