John Cena creates history with iconic win over Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 41

John Cena etched his name in the history books at WrestleMania 41, defeating Cody Rhodes to clinch the Undisputed WWE Championship, surpassing the legendary Ric Flair’s long-standing record.

In what was billed as his final WrestleMania appearance before his retirement at the end of 2025, Cena delivered a performance to remember in the main event at Allegiant Stadium, marking the occasion with a dramatic and controversial victory.

Cena, who won the Elimination Chamber to earn his shot at the title, turned heel for the first time in years ahead of the event. The build-up saw him ambush Rhodes alongside The Rock and rapper Travis Scott, shifting the tone of the storyline.

At WrestleMania, he entered the arena without his usual bright lights and colours, instead walking out to a black screen with his name and signature theme song, signalling a more ruthless version of the 16-time champion.

The match itself was filled with high drama and frequent momentum shifts. Rhodes initially countered Cena’s trademark Five Knuckle Shuffle with a Cody Cutter.

John Cena responded with multiple Attitude Adjustments (AAs), one of which followed a drop toehold that halted Rhodes’ attempt at a Bionic Elbow tribute.

Rhodes managed to survive several near-falls and even connected with his finishing move, Cross Rhodes. However, with the referee temporarily down, the pinfall could not be counted.

Cena capitalised on the chaos, exposing the turnbuckle and slamming Rhodes’ head into it before landing a fourth AA. Rhodes again kicked out, showcasing his resilience.

The turning point came when Travis Scott and his Cactus Jack crew interfered late in the match. Rhodes took out Scott but was caught off guard by Cena, who hit a low blow followed by the decisive pinfall.

With the win, Cena officially surpassed Ric Flair’s record to become the most decorated world champion in WWE history, securing his 17th title reign in what could be his final WrestleMania appearance.
