LONDON: England’s experienced batter Joe Root has been rested for the remaining matches of the ODI series against Ireland in a bid to prepare for the ICC World Cup 2023 in India, starting next month.

“In preparation for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in India starting next month, Yorkshire and England Men’s batter Joe Root is to be rested for the remaining matches in the Metro Bank ODI series against Ireland,” England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said in a statement.

Following Joe Root’s exclusion for the remaining two ODIs against Ireland, the ECB added Somerset batter, Tom Kohler-Cadmore to bolster England’s squad.

Kohler-Cadmore is set to join the England squad in Nottingham following the conclusion of Somerset’s County Championship Division One match against Kent at Taunton, which is scheduled to finish on Friday.

The second ODI of the three-match series is slated to take place at Trent Bridge on Saturday.

For the unversed, Joe Root was added to the England squad for the first ODI against Ireland at his own request as he bid to rediscover his form in the 50-over format ahead of the ICC World Cup 2023.

However, he did not get the opportunity to boast his preparations as the first ODI between England and Ireland was washed out without a ball bowled.

Reports further suggested that the ECB also consider adding Jason Roy as Joe Root’s replacement but the right-handed opener turned down the opportunity to re-join England squad for the ODI series remainder.

Notably, Roy was dropped from England’s ICC World Cup 2023 squad despite being named in the provisional 15.

1st ODI: England v Ireland, Wednesday 20 September 2023, Headingley, Leeds (match abandoned)

2nd ODI: England v Ireland, Saturday 23 September 2023, Trent Bridge, Nottingham

3rd ODI: England v Ireland, Tuesday 26 September 2023, Seat Unique Stadium, Bristol
