Jadeja’s all-round heroics propel India to crush Sri Lanka in the first Test

MOHALI: India’s all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja shone with bat and bowl to power the home side to seal a crushing victory by an innings and 222 runs against Sri Lanka in the first Test, here on Sunday.

Jadeja first scored an unbeaten 175 runs then bettered it with a total of nine wickets in the first match. The left-handed all-rounder became the only cricketer in the world to achieve such a feat.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, resuming at an overnight score of 103/4, could only manage to score 174 before being bowled out. The top-order batter Pathum Nissanka fought hard with his 61, while the rest of the batters remained clueless against Indian bowlers.

For India, their hero of the first Test – Jadeja bagged a five-fer, while Ravichandran Ashwin and Jasprit Bumrah picked two wickets each. Mohammed Shami, on the other hand, made one scalp.

After bowling out the opposition for a skimpy 178, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma decided to enforce the follow-on and invited the touring side to bat again.

In the second innings, Sri Lankan batters failed again and could only score 174 before bowling out. Niroshan Dickwella fought hard this time for the Lions while the rest of the batters failed to save the match for the touring side and as a result, India sealed a crushing victory by an innings and 222 runs.

For India, Jadeja led the way again but with Ashwin; claiming four wickets each, while Shami picked two this time around.
