India cricketer Abishek Porel arrested over alleged rape

India’s emerging wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel has been arrested in a case pertaining to allegations of rape and other sexual offenses.

Porel, 23, was arrested by the Kolkata Police on Monday night and presented in the High Court the next day. He was later remanded to three days of police custody.

The left-handed batter has played 32 first-class games and 35 Indian Premier League (IPL) matches.

The case against Porel was filed on 23 June. After the first hearing on July 14, the court was told that further steps were needed to seize electronic devices in the possession of the accused, which allegedly contained obscene photographs of the victim.

“Having considered the respective submissions made on behalf of the parties and taking note of the contents of the communication dated 6th July, 2026, it appears that accused persons being respondent nos.6 & 7 are required to be apprehended for seizure of electronic devices lying with them so that data stored therein cannot be shared with others,” the court said.

“Concerned police authorities are directed to continue with their endeavour to apprehend respondent nos.6 & 7 and to make seizure of devices so obnoxious data stored therein shall not be further disseminated.”

During the 11 August hearing, the court said it had received a message from the officer in charge of Mogra Police Station saying that “respondent no. 6” had been arrested on the night of 11 August 2026. The police asked for more time to take the necessary steps following the arrest.

Porel has not played any competitive cricket since IPL 2026 ended. He played only four matches for DC in the tournament.
