The FIFA World Cup 2026 has introduced a major structural change that brings third-place teams back into the knockout equation for the first time since the 1994 edition in the United States.
With the tournament expanded from 32 to 48 teams, the competition format has been significantly reshaped, creating new qualification pathways and extending the knockout stage to a Round of 32.

Under the revised system, the group stage now features 12 groups instead of eight. While the top two teams from each group still qualify directly, finishing third no longer means automatic elimination.
Instead, eight of the 12 third-placed teams will also progress to the knockout rounds once the group stage concludes on June 27.
How the system works
This means the Round of 32 will consist of:
- 24 automatic qualifiers (top two from each group)
- 8 best third-placed teams
In total, 32 teams will advance into the knockout phase, keeping more nations in contention deeper into the tournament.
However, not all third-placed teams are guaranteed progression. FIFA will rank all 12 third-placed sides in a dedicated overall table to determine which eight advance.
Tiebreakers for third-place qualification
When teams are level on points, FIFA applies a strict set of criteria to decide who moves forward:
- Points obtained
The first measure remains total points earned in the group stage, although many teams are expected to finish level on three or four points. - Goal difference
If teams are tied on points, goal difference becomes decisive. A stronger winning margin or narrower defeats could prove crucial. - Goals scored
If goal difference is also equal, total goals scored will separate teams, rewarding more attacking performances. - Fair play record
Discipline comes next, with yellow and red cards counted. Fewer bookings improve a team’s chances, with red cards carrying heavier penalties than yellows. - FIFA ranking
If teams still cannot be separated, FIFA world rankings will be used as the final deciding factor.
The new format ensures that matches in the final round of group fixtures carry added significance, not just for teams fighting for the top two spots, but also for those aiming to secure one of the best third-place positions.

As a result, teams that start slowly in the group stage may still find themselves alive in the tournament, provided their overall performance, discipline, and goal output are strong enough to compete in the global third-place table.
