Multan Sultans find themselves in a precarious position in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10, having secured only one win from six matches.
With the league stage nearing its conclusion, their qualification for the playoffs now hinges on a flawless run of results and favourable outcomes elsewhere.
Currently, Multan has lost five out of their six games, placing them at the bottom of the table with only two points and a poor net run rate of -1.562.
Their remaining four fixtures are scheduled against the Quetta Gladiators, Karachi Kings, and Peshawar Zalmi. Notably, Quetta, Karachi, and Peshawar are currently ranked third, fourth, and fifth on the points table, respectively.
If Multan Sultans are to have any realistic chance of finishing in the top four, they not only need to win all four games, but they must also beat their immediate rivals, denying them crucial points in the process.
In doing so, Multan would finish on 10 points, a number that typically secures a spot in the playoffs. But given how tightly packed the table is this season, 10 points might still not be enough on its own, with net run rate being the final judge.
Winning all four games is essential for Multan Sultans; however, even with that outcome, safe passage to the PSL 10 playoffs isn’t guaranteed unless other results also favour them.
Quetta Gladiators are currently on six points with five matches left, including two against Multan. Even if Multan beat them twice, Quetta could qualify with 12 points if they win their remaining three.
Karachi Kings currently have six points and are set to play against Multan Sultans, Lahore Qalandars, Peshawar Zalmi, and Islamabad United.
Similar to Quetta Gladiators, Karachi Kings can still qualify for the next round even if they lose to Multan, provided they win their remaining three games.
On the other hand, Peshawar Zalmi, sitting on four points after six games, are also in the mix and can still qualify for the PSL 10 playoffs.
Multan Sultans not only need to secure wins, but they also need to achieve significant victories to improve their poor net run rate. Additionally, they will be hoping for favourable outcomes in other matches.
It’s essential for them to treat every game from this point onward as a knockout match, not only to revive their own chances but also to keep the PSL 10 exciting right up until the final group stage game, where they will face the Quetta Gladiators.
