Pakistan’s Hasnain Akhtar clinches U-17 World Snooker Championship title

MANAMA: Pakistan’s young cueist Hasnain Akhtar defeated Wales’ Riley Powell in the final of the International Billiards & Snooker Federation (IBSF) World U-17 Snooker Championship in Bahrain on Friday to win the tournament.

The 16-year-old secured a 4-0 victory against his rival, while Pakistan’s Muhammad Asif’s match against India’s Brijesh Damani is currently ongoing in the final of the IBSF World Masters Snooker Championship 2025.

Hasnain Akhtar, who remained undefeated in the tournament, showcased his dominance throughout the final, recording a comprehensive win with the frames score of 86-7, 73-35, 50-32, and 98-4.

With this victory, Hasnain Akhtar also etched his name into Pakistan’s history books, becoming the only player to win the IBSF World Championship in the U17 category.

A day earlier, Hasnain Akhtar booked the spot in the final with a comprehensive victory over Poland’s Oliwier Nizialek.

The 16-year-old started the proceedings dominantly by sealing three consecutive frames. Despite Oliwier Nizialek bouncing back, dominant Akhtar maintained his perfect record with a 4-0 victory, with the final scores of 76-1, 69-8, 88-0, and 62-37.

Hasnain Akhtar also finished the group stage unbeaten with victories against Qatar’s Abd­ulla Al Musleh and UAE’s Mohammad Alrumaithi.

The Under-17 IBSF World Snooker event runs till July 24, featuring 32 players from 15 nations divided across eight groups. The top two cueists from each group will advance to the pre-quarterfinals of the tournament.
