DARWIN: Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud produced a historic spell on Thursday as Australia were bowled out for their lowest Test total against the Tigers, scoring 198 on the opening day of the first Test at Marrara Stadium.
Mahmud finished with impressive figures of 6-55 from 17 overs, becoming the first Bangladesh bowler to claim a five-wicket haul against Australia in Test cricket.
He also became the first Bangladesh fast bowler to take five wickets in a Test on Australian soil.
Australia’s 198 surpassed their previous lowest total against Bangladesh, which was 217 in the second Test at Mirpur in 2017.

Mahmud’s performance marked a major improvement on Bangladesh’s previous best bowling figures against Australia.
Mustafizur Rahman previously held the record for the best figures by a Bangladesh bowler against Australia, having returned 4-84 in Chattogram in 2017.
The 26-year-old Mahmud also registered the third-best Test figures by a Bangladesh pace bowler.
Only Shahadat Hossain, with 6-27, and Ebadot Hossain, with 6-46, have produced better six-wicket hauls for Bangladesh’s fast bowlers in Test cricket.
Mahmud’s latest performance was his third five-wicket haul in Test cricket. He had previously taken five wickets against India and six against Sri Lanka. His 6-55 also improved on his previous best Test figures of 6-157.
