BIRMINGHAM: Pakistani weightlifter Haider Ali secured the fifth position as he lifted an overall 305 kgs in the 81kg category in the weightlifting event of the Commonwealth Games, here on Monday.
Haider lagged in his second and third attempts as he finished the snatch round with his successful first-attempt lift of 135 kgs.
However, in the clean and jerk round, he successfully lifted the 170 kgs in the third attempt after carrying 161 kgs in the first attempt.
Meanwhile, England’s Chris Murray clinched the gold medal with the record lift of 325 kgs, followed by Australia’s Kyle Bruce with 323 kgs lift to secure the second spot, and Canada’s Nicolas Vachon in the third place with 320 kgs.
It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistani weightlifters, Nooh Butt and Hanzala Dastagir will compete in the 109kg plus category and 109kg category respectively, in the weightlifting event of the Commonwealth Games on August 3.
