BRAMPTON: Marcus Stoinis backed his brisk half-century with a three-for and propelled Surrey Jaguars to a thumping 80-run victory over Toronto Nationals in the seventh match of the GT20 Canada 2024.
Put into bat first, the Jaguars registered a commendable total of 161/6 on the board, mainly due to Stoinis’ half-century.
The Jaguars, however, had a contrasting start to their innings as they lost opener Sunil Narine (2) in the third over with just 17 runs on the board.
Surrey Jaguars then lost two more wickets in regular intervals and consequently slipped to 49/3 in 6.5 overs.
Jaguars’ captain Stoinis, after coming out to bat at No.5, soon took the reigns of his side’s batting expedition and went after the Nationals’ bowlers.
The right-handed batter smashed three fours and four sixes on his way to a 37-ball 57 which lasted in the 17th over.
Later, Virandeep Singh (20*) and Mohammad Nabi (13) added valuable runs to the Surrey Jaguars’ total and took them past the 160-run mark.
Muhammad Rohid and Junaid Siddique bagged two wickets each for the Nationals while Jatinderpal Matharu and Romario Shepherd shared two wickets between them.
In response, Toronto Nationals’ batting lineup crumbled against a disciplined Surrey Jaguars’ bowling attack and could accumulate 81 runs before being bundled out in the 18th over.
Wicketkeeper batter Unmukt Chand remained the top-scorer for the Nationals with his 17-ball 21 up the order while Rassie van der Dussen (15), Nicholas Kirton (11) and Rohit Paudel (10) were the other notable run-getters.
The rest of the Nationals’ batters, on the other hand, failed to make it into the double figures.
Sunil Narine and Marcus Stoinis led the Jaguars’ charge with the ball, taking three wickets each while Nabi took two.
The 80-run victory lifted Surrey Jaguars to the third in the GT20 Canada 2024 standings with two points in two matches while Toronto Nationals remained second with four points in three matches.
