Andries Gous leads Toronto Nationals to clinch GT20 Canada title

BRAMPTON: Jason Behrendorff’s three-wicket haul, followed by Andries Gous’ half-century steered Toronto Nationals to defeat defending champions Montreal Tigers in the GT20 Canada 2024 final.

After opting to bowl, Toronto Nationals restricted Montreal Tigers to 96-9 in 20 overs, thanks to a dominant bowling display.

Romario Shepherd removed Parveen Kumar (6) in the second over before Behrendorff dismissed Gerhard Erasmus (2) and Tim Seifert (0) in the next over.

Behrendorff got skipper Chris Lynn (3) caught behind in the next over to leave Montreal Tigers struggling at 27-4 in 4.3 overs.

The batting side soon collapsed to 42-7 before Corbin Bosch and Jaskaran Singh stitched a crucial 46-run stand for the eighth wicket.

Jatinderpal Matharu broke the partnership with 88 runs on the board as he removed Singh after he had scored 16 off 26.

Bosch top-scored with 35 runs from 33 balls before getting out on the penultimate delivery of the innings.

Behrendorff returned with a brilliant 3-8, while Shepherd picked two wickets. Junaid Siddique, Mohammad Nawaz, Nikhil Dutta and Matharu contributed with one wicket each.

While chasing a small 97-run target, Toronto Nationals lost their opening batters with only 12 runs on the board.

However, Andries Gous and Rassie van der Dussen displayed excellent batting prowess to ensure an eight-wicket victory in only 15 overs to lift the GT20 Canada trophy.

They constructed an 88-run partnership as Montreal Tigers’ bowlers toiled throughout the innings in search of another breakthrough.

Gous played a solid 58-run knock from 49 balls with eight boundaries while Van der Dussen scored  30 off 34.

For Montreal Tigers, Azmatullah Omarzai and Corbin Bosch managed one wicket each.
